Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, and the Georgia Environmental Policy Act of 1991, project PR- 70(101), Echols County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project’s area of potential environmental effect. The proposed project would consist of grading, drainage, base, and surfacing on County Roads 70 and 116 in Echols County. The proposed project on CR 70 would begin at the end of pavement at the Lowndes/Echols County line and would continue easterly along CR 70 to an ending point at CR 65. Also, the proposed project on CR 116 would begin at SR 11/US 129 and would continue westerly to a dead end on CR 117. The existing right-of-way is the existing roadway width, while the required right-of-way will vary from 15 m to 24 m (50ft to 80ft). An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project’s rights-of-way was conducted for the entire 2 km (1.291 mi.) project corridor.
