Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BRS-854(9), Fannin County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. Project BRS-854(9) proposes to replace the existing bridge over Cooper's Creek on SR 60 in Fannin County, Georgia. This project has been subjected to two previous surveys, one in 1996 by Sherry Flemming and again in 2001 by Erica Jeter (HPD# HP010702-001). Since that time, the project has been changed to include additional mainline widening and lengthening. In addition, there will be an intersection improvement at SR 60 and CR 240. The project will begin 510 feet west and end 560 feet east of the present bridge. The entire length is 0.275 mile. The existing right-of-way for SR 60 is 100 feet. The required right-of-way for SR 60 varies with a maximum of 50 feet. The intersection improvement includes a realignment of a portion of CR 240 to the west of its current location. The existing right-of-way for CR 240 is 50 feet. The required right-of-way for CR 240 is 50 feet on new location. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted along the entire length of the project corridor.
