Abstract

During 1980, palynological investigations were conducted along the Savannah River in connection with the proposed construction of the Richard B. Russell Multiple Resource Area. The work was performed by the Department of Biology, Indiana University (under sub-contract to Thunderbird Research Corporation) for Interagency Archeological Services, Atlanta, Georgia and the Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District. Three study units were examined during this investigation. Two of these, Gregg Shoals and Transect 10, were in the floodplain of the Savannah River Valley and the third, Nodoroc Bog, lies outside of the project area. Nodoroc is an Upland Piedmont Bog which lies about 20 miles away. The data from these units allowed the reconstruction of a vegetational sequence from 22,000 years B.P. to the present. Five vegetational periods were delineated: Full Glacial, Late Glacial, Early Postglacial, Mid-postglacial and Late Postglacial.
