Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project TSAP-10(50), Clarke County has been surveyed with respect to archaeo1ogical resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. This project is located on State Route 10 (Lexington Highway), east of Athens, beginning at the intersection of Winterville Road and extending easterly to a point 1500 feet east of Gaines School Road (2.022 miles). The present facility is 24 feet wide except at Gaines School Road where it widens to 48 feet. The existing right-of-way is 60 feet. It is proposed to widen the facility symmetrically about the existing centerline for most of the project with selected sections widened unequally. Required right-of-way will be a minimum of 86 feet to accommodate the Urban Major Street design concept. This design will provide four 12 feet wide through lanes with a 14 foot flush median for a total pavement width of 62 feet. Curb and gutter will be used at select locations to minimize right-of-way requirements or handle surface drainage; however, the majority of the project will be constructed with a rural typical section. No sidewalk will be provided. The facility will remain free access.
