Abstract

The purpose of this project is to expand the NaviGAtor system on 1-285 from the 1-75 South Interchange in Clayton County east to the 1-20 interchange in DeKalb County (Figure 1). This project will add fiber optic trunk lines along 1-285, tying together Hub L (located at the I-75 interchange), Hub V (a new hub located at the 1-675 interchange), and Hub I (located on I-20 at Columbia Drive). The fiber optic trunk line, totaling 23.9 miles, will be located under the northbound and southbound shoulders. The archeological assessment included consultation with the Georgia Archeological Site Files and a visual reconnaissance of the proposed project. The site file search revealed that no archeological sites had previously been recorded within the 1-285 and 1-20 corridors. However, several prehistoric soapstone quarry sites were recorded in advance of construction of 1-675. These are all part of Soapstone Ridge which is partially bisected by 1-285. For this survey a site is defined as a location where evidence of past human activity (more than 50 years old) was found in a meaningful cultural context.
