Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project FR-041-2 (40), Effingham County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. The proposed project would widen S.R. 21 form Rincon to Springfield and would include a Springfield bypass. The project would begin at the terminus of project EDFR-041- 2(36) in north Rincon then would extend northerly along existing S.R. 21 to the city limits south of Springfield. From this point the project would proceed westerly on new location crossing the Central of Georgia Railroad and C.R. 176 at-grade. From there, the alignment would extend northerly intersecting C.R. 190 and S.R. 119 at-grade and would tie into existing S.R. 21 north of Springfield. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of- way was conducted for the entire 8.04-mile length of the proposed project corridor.
