Abstract

The proposed project improves operations at four intersections of the State Route (SR) 36/74 one-way pair in downtown Thomaston, in Upson County, Georgia (Figure 1). Intersection 1. SR 74/E. Main Street, N. Bethel Street, S. Bethel Street and SR 36/Barnesville Highway: SR 36/Barnesville Highway runs northeast to southwest and feeds into the intersection of SR 74 (Main Street) and Bethel Street, creating a five-leg intersection in downtown Thomaston, Georgia. Currently, Barnesville Highway and Main Street both have two 12-foot lanes with parallel parking on the adjacent shoulders, which vary from 8 to 14 feet in width. The existing right-of-way (ROW) for Barnesville Highway is 43 to 45 feet in width and for Main Street is 55 to 65 feet in width. Bethel Street has two lanes that vary in width between 10 to 12 feet with 8- to 14-foot shoulders with 32 to 75 feet of existing ROW. All the streets have curb and gutter with sidewalks that vary from 4 to 12 feet in width. The five-leg intersection of SR 36/Barnesville Highway, SR 74/ E. Main Street, and Bethel Street has stop control in all directions. A four-legged roundabout is proposed for the five-way intersection of SR 74/E. Main Street, N. Bethel Street, S. Bethel Street, and SR 36/Barnesville Highway. With the four-legged roundabout, E. Thompson Street would be realigned to enter SR 36/Barnesville Highway prior to accessing the roundabout. The realignment would eliminate access from N. Bethel Street to SR 74/E. Main Street. N. Bethel Street traffic would be diverted onto E. Thompson Street eastbound to access the roundabout or westbound to continue to downtown Intersection 1. SR 74/E. Main Street, N. Bethel Street, S.
