Cultural Resources Survey Water Treatment Facility

An intensive cultural resources survey was conducted R.S. Webb & Associates on November 21, 1994 for the proposed three-acre Banks County water treatment facility and access road. The project area is located approximately 3.0 kilometers south of Baldwin, Georgia. In addition to the facility site and access road, a 0.4 kilometer intake line was also surveyed, beginning at the existing dam site and terminating at the proposed water treatment facility site. The goal of the survey was to detect cultural resources within these areas in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended. Two isolated finds (IF) were recorded representing limited prehistoric and historic activity within the project area. IF-1 is a quartz flake fragment located within the proposed treatment facility site. IF-2 is an Albany-slipped stoneware crock fragment found within the proposed access road area. Based on the survey, the combination of the previous disturbances with the generally steep grade indicates that there is little potential for significant cultural resource within the project area. The two isolated finds detected within the project area were both found in disturbed contexts and are not considered important cultural resources. Given the survey findings, it is the opinion of the Principal Investigator that no further cultural resources work is required on the treatment facility site, the access road or the intake line.
