Abstract

The proposed project would consist of replacing the existing bridge carrying State Route (SR) 52 over the Chestatee River (Structure ID 187-0011-0), located approximately 2.5 miles east of Dahlonega in Lumpkin County, Georgia (Figure 1 and 2). The existing bridge was built in 1937 and widened in 1985. In order to improve roadway geometry and maintain traffic during project activities, a permanent offset replacement bridge will be constructed to the west of the existing bridge. The existing bridge will be removed. The proposed project length is 0.4 mile and the proposed new bridge is approximately 300-400 feet (ft) long. The new proposed bridge and roadway lane widths will consist of 12-foot lanes with 8-foot shoulders. The current right-of-way (ROW) width of SR 52 is 100 feet (30 meters) wide or 50 feet (15 meters) to either side of the existing road center line. While the existing ROW will remain the same width, acquisition of new ROW of 100 feet (30 meters) wide is required to encompass the offset of the bridge. In addition, new temporary and permanent easements will be required for construction and maintenance of slopes near the northern and southern project termini.
