Abstract

ln compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project EDS-27(114) in Troup County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources – within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect.

Proposed project EDS-27(114) in Troup County would consist of the construction of a new location facility known as the I- I 85 connector, which would run from US 27 /SR l in a southeasterly direction, to 1-185. Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. originally surveyed this project in 1998. Since that time, an interchange has been added at the intersection of Hammett Road and the new location bypass. The proposed interchange would add between 50 and 600 feet of required right-of-way to the proposed project corridor.

An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

No archaeological sites were recorded during the current reassessment survey. One NRHP eligible site, 9TP930, is located within the project's area of potential environmental effect (APE), and the current changes will require more right-of-way (approximately 100 feet maximum) from the western edge of the site than was initially anticipated. The current enlarged APE will be incorporated in all forthcoming Section 106 documents and mitigation plans. Besides the additional required right-of-way from site 9TP930, the proposed changes to the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
