Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, STP-686(24), Bleckley County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project' s area of potential environmental effect. The proposed project consists of drainage improvements in the vicinity of Gum Swamp Creek in Bleckley County. The project would begin approximately 18 m (59.1 ft) south of Gum Swamp Creek and would end approximately 1.26 km (0.78 mi) north of Gum Swamp Creek. Drainage improvements would include the installation of 1050 mm (42 in) concrete cross drain pipes at various locations and shoulder and ditch improvements along the west side of SR 112. The existing right- of- way is approximately 18.3 m (60 ft). Additional required right-of- way would vary from approximately 5. 5 m (18 ft) to 19.8 m (65 ft) on the west side of SR 112 and from approximately 6.1 m (20 ft) to 13.7 m (45 ft) on the east side of SR 112. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted along the entire project corridor.
