Abstract

This report presents the findings of a cultural resource survey for a proposed trans-Georgia 40 inch O.D. petroleum products pipeline. Specifically, this report addresses that portion of the proposed pipeline extending from the Colonial Pipeline tank farm in Powder Springs eastward to Georgia Highway 141 in Gwinnett County. The first 46 kilometers (28.5 miles) of the proposed pipeline corridor was afforded complete survey, coverage. The rationale for complete coverage was to generate a predictive model for site location. This model was to be used to select those areas to be sampled in the second phase of the pipeline survey. For purposes of this study, the pipeline corridor was divided in two segments; the uplands and the Chattahoochee River floodplain. Each segment was surveyed simultaneously by two crews. The survey methods consisted of pedestrian surface reconnaissance, inspection of eroded areas and stream banks, shovel cuts, and deep subsurface testing using a 4 inch hand-turned bucket auger.
