Abstract

In compliance with Section I 06 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project NH-285-1 (391) in DeKalb County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect.

Project NH-285-1(391), DeKalb County proposes to construct five noise barriers on the western and eastern sides of I-285 between Northlake Parkway and Chamblee-Tucker Road. On the western side of 1-285, wall one begins just north of the 1-285 southbound off-ramp to Northlake Parkway and ends just south of the Henderson Road bridge for a distance of approximately 3600 feet. Wall two begins just north of the Evans Road underpass and ends just south of the Henderson Mill Road underpass for a distance of approximately 1700 feet. On the eastern side of 1-285, wall three begins just north of the Northlake Parkway on ramp to 1-285 and ends just south of Henderson Road for a distance of approximately 4100 feet. Wall four begins near Greystone Circle and ends north of Evans Road for a distance of 1950 feet. Wall five begins south of Henderson Mill Road and ends just south of Chamblee-Tucker Road for a distance of 2 I 50 feet. This project includes the addition of two (2) foot outside paved shoulders throughout the project to meet AASHTO standards. All work would be done within existing right-of-way.

An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic. Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
