Abstract

New South Associates conducted Phase II archeological testing of Sites C0307 and 9C0367 at the proposed extension of the McCollum Field runway for Lowe Engineers between April 4, and April 11, 1993. Two trenches were dug and profiled at Site 9C0307. These appeared to have the potential for being a Civil War entrenchment. However, this site is probably a ditch related to a quarry operation n the area. Site 9C0357, which contained a Dalton projectile point from the survey phase, was examined with shovel tests and two one by two meter test units. This site was very eroded with a plow zone extending into the subsoil clay. Site 9C0307 is not recommended as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, and no further work is recommended at the site. Site 9C0357 is not recommended as eligible for the National Register, and no further work is recommended at the site.
