Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project RS-2844(1), Taliaferro has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor. The project proposes to construct, on new location, a by-pass around the west city limits of Crawfordville, Georgia, from S.R. 22 south of the city to S.R. 22 northwest of the city. The project is 1.4 miles long and will require a R/W of 100 feet. The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and agreed upon by the Federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Officer and State Archaeologist. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
