Abstract

The proposed project consists of the paving of shoulders along SR 26/US 80 from the SR 119 Connector to the Bryan County Line (see attached map). Total project length is approximately 13 kilometers (8 miles). The existing two-lane facility would have an additional 0.6 meter (2 feet) of pavement put down along the right and left shoulders. All proposed activity would occur within existing right-of-way.

The corridor passes through mostly rural areas, and has had sparse residential development occur along it. Land is primarily used for pine tree farming. The majority of houses along the corridor are modern and few pre World War II dwellings are to be found.

The area of potential effect for this project is considered to be limited to the existing right-of-way, within which all proposed activity would occur. This project does not have the potential to visually affect any eligible resources located outside the existing right-of-way because no slopes would be changed and all paving would be done at existing grade.

The proposed project has been researched for historic resources by GDOT historians in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto. The Department of Natural Resources' Bulloch County preliminary survey for historic resources was consulted to aid in the identification of historic resources. Lists of current and pending National Register properties were checked and aerial photographs along the length of the proposed project were consulted. In addition, the Coastal Georgia RDC, the Bulloch County Historical Society and the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation were contacted in an effort to identify known historic resources.
