Abstract

At the request of the U.S.D.A. Forest Service, the Ohio Valley Archaeological Associates conducted an archaeological survey and assessment of approximately 6000 acres of land located in the Red River Gorge Geological Area, Stanton District, Daniel Boone National Forest. One hundred and six prehistoric sites and twenty-four historic sites were located. The prehistoric sites included the Archaic, Woodland, and Ft. Ancient occupations. The historic sites included rock houses, stalls, splash dams, moonshine stills and possibly salt peter workings.
