Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, the project has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the project corridor.

Plans indicate that the bridge over the Little Ochlocknee River on CR 70 will be replaced. The approach from the south will begin just north of US 19 and the intersection of CR 70 and 157. The proposed corridor will follow the existing road north to where the existing road turns sharply west. The proposed corridor will continue in a straight line across the river, where it will rejoin CR 70 approximately 1,500’ northeast of the river. Required right of way for the entire project will be 100’.

The archaeological survey was conducted in accordance with "GDOT Archaeological Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists and agreed upon by the Federal Highway Administration, State Historic Preservation Officer and State Archaeologist. These guidelines outline general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys of transportation projects, and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.

No significant archaeological resources were located within the proposed project corridor. It is concluded therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP.
