Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project STP-1267(13), Oconee County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. The original project would replace the existing bridge on SR 15 over Rose Creek. The project would begin approximately 1000' south of Rose Creek and end approximately 1200' north of Rose Creek. Existing right-of-way on SR 15 varies up to 200'; approximately 10' of additional right-of-way would be required west of SR 15 and approximately 20' east of SR 15. Traffic would be maintained via an on-site detour, requiring a temporary easement measuring approximately 2200' X 120'. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor. The project remains the same with the addition of an overflow bridge from station 28+ 10 to station 29+ 70. The overflow bridge would be constructed within the original project limits.
