Abstract

The purpose of project MSL-0004-00(427) is to widen Lee Road and South Sweetwater Road from 1-20 West to US 78/SR 5/SR 8-Bankhead Highway to provide greater mobility in the area. The sections of Lee Road and South Sweetwater Road within the project area are currently two lanes and are classified major arterials in Douglas County. At the southern limit of the project, Lee Road connects to Interstate 20 at exit 41. The Lee Road interchange with 1-20 provides Interstate access to eastern Douglas County in the Lithia Springs area and also connects to the eastern limits of Douglasville. The project is planned as a widening from a two-lane to a four-lane divided roadway from 1-20 West to Skyview Drive. From Skyview Drive to US 78 - Bankhead Highway, the project is planned as widening from a two-lane to a three lane roadway. The three lane section is one lane in each direction with the center lane being a two way left turn lane. Median openings will be placed at major intersections in accordance with Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) policy. Major intersections on the South Sweetwater Road portion are at US 78-Bankhead Highway, Skyview Drive, and Lee Road and on the Lee Road portion at Vulcan Drive and Sweetwater Industrial Boulevard. A realignment of Lee Road/South Sweetwater Road is proposed to facilitate better north-south traffic movement between Lee Road and South Sweetwater Road. Currently, Lee Road joins Sweetwater Road at a T-intersection. The realignment would improve operations and safety and provide a direct connection between Lee Road and South Sweetwater Road by having Sweetwater Road cross-intersect with Lee Road. There are no major bridges within the project limits. Very limited sidewalks currently exist along Lee Road/South Sweetwater Road. The project will include sidewalk on the west side and a multi-use path on the east side of the roadway.
