Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project STP-1617(5)(6)(7), Haralson, Polk and Paulding counties have been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. Project STP-1617(5)(6)(7) proposes 10 widen CR 342/Vinson Mountain Road between Bremen and Rockmart/Van Wen. The project would begin at CR 346/Morgan Road in Haralson County and continue north through Paulding and Polk counties 10 end at US 278/SR 6 in Van Wert. The existing typical section consists of two 10 to 11-foot travel lanes with variable width grassed shoulders on 100 feet of right-of-way. The proposed typical section would consist of two 12-foot travel lanes with 8-foot grassed shoulders on 120 feet of right-of-way. The total project length is approximately 16.4 miles. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Admtnistra11on and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
