Abstract

Environmental Corporation of America (ECA) has completed an Archaeological Assessment for the federal undertaking at the subject site. The proposed undertaking would include a proposed 50-foot by 50-foot (15-meter by 15-meter) lease area that would include a 199-foot overall height monopole telecommunications structure and associated ground-level support equipment. The facility would be accessible by a proposed approximate 51-foot long by 30-foot wide (15-meter by 9-meter) access/utility easement. The proposed facility would be located off Johnny Mercer Boulevard, Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. This Archaeological Evaluation was conducted to ascertain whether the proposed undertaking on the project site might directly or indirectly affect cultural resources, if any such resources exist. During the database research, we identified two previously recorded archaeological sites (9CH8 and 9CHJ31) and four archaeological survey reports (921, 1902, 5131, and 5156) within our standard I-mile background research radius. No previously recorded archaeological sites or surveys are located within our APE for direct effects. No shovel test pits were proposed because the project area is located in an electrical substation covered with gravel. ECA believes that the proposed undertaking would have no effect on any historic or prehistoric archaeological resources that are listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore, for archaeological cultural resources, we recommend no further consultation under Section I 06 Review of the National Historic Preservation Act for this proposed undertaking.
