Abstract

A cultural resources survey of 366 ha (905 ac) on the Chattooga Ranger District of Chattahoochee National Forest was completed in September 1993. The survey was conducted prior to timber sales in portions of Compartments 202 and 205 in Stephens County, and 267 in White County. The survey was authorized by and in compliance with the Antiquities Act of 1906, the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, and numerous additional laws and orders. A total of 17 archaeological sites and three isolated finds were recorded. Ten of the archaeological sites are potentially eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) at the local level of significance. These sites should be protected by avoidance pending further testing to determine NRHP status. The survey area also includes seven previously recorded archaeological sites, of which five are potentially eligible for listing on the NRHP and also should be protected. One of these latter sites is an historic cemetery. This report presents the details of the survey. The results and recommendations are summarized in the following table.
