Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, and the Georgia Environmental Policy Act of 1991, project TSAP-15(193) in Habersham County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and the Georgia Register of Historic Places. The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. Project TSAP-15(193) proposes the lengthening of an existing right tum lane at the SR 15/365/CR 387 intersection in Habersham County. A temporary easement has been added for the completion of this portion of the proposed project. The dimensions of the easement are 390 x I 5 foot. The proposed project will also construct a new right turn lane and traffic signal at the CR 387/SR 385 intersection. The total length of the project is approximately 2587 feet. The proposed construction, with the exception of the temporary easement, would be within the existing right-of-way. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHW A Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
