Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project STP-058-1(25), Rabun County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)". The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. Project STP-058-1(25) would construct an eastbound passing lane on SR 2/US 76 from just east of Lake Burton to CR 216. This project was previously surveyed and cleared by Rick Richardson in 1996 and Teresa Lotti in 2001 (HPD# HPOl0l 16-005). Since those surveys the project has been changed to include increased right-of-way for the mainline widening and horizontal alignment. In addition, temporary easements have been added. The existing right-of-way for SR 2/US 76 varies with a maximum of 150 feet. The proposed right-of-way varies with an additional 265 feet. The easements vary in sizes throughout the project corridor. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted along the entire length of the project corridor.
