Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project STP-0S0-2(42), Habersham County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eli2ible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)". The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. Project STP-050-2(42) would widen and reconstruct SR 115/SR 17 in Habersham County. Georgia. This project was subjected to an archaeological survey by Brockington and Associates, Inc. in 1999 (HPD#HP99 l 005-0 l 0). Since that time, the proposed project has been changed to include additional mainline widening and an intersection improvement at the SR 115 and SR 17 split. In addition. the proposed project will include casements throughout the project. The project begins 1450 feet east of CR 164/Beaver Dam Road and terminates approximately 750 feet west of SR 17. The intersection improvement would require a new alignment shift west of the current location of SR 17. The existing right-of-way for SR 115/SR 17 is l 00 feet. The required right-of-way for SR 11 S/SR 17 varies with a maximum of an additional 100 feet. The existing right-of-way for SR 17 is approximately 100 feet. The required right-of-way for SR 17 is 100 feet on new location. The total length of the project is 1.32 miles. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted along the entire length of the project corridor.
