Abstract

In compliance with Section I 06 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project EDS-545(31), Jefferson County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)". The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. Project EDS-545(3 I) would widen and reconstruct US I/SR 4/SR 17 in Jefferson County, Georgia. The proposed project was subjected to an archaeological survey in I 998 by R.S. Webb & Associates (HP# HP980401-001). Since that time, the proposed alignment has been changed to include mainline widening and an intersection improvement. The mainline widening of US l/SR 4/SR 17 would begin 0.33 mile south of SR 296/Harvey Street and end 0.29 mile south of CR 397. The intersection improvement would be located at SR 296/Harvey Street. The intersection from US l/SR 4/SR 17 and SR 296/Harvey Street would be shifted to the north of its present location onto new location. The existing right-of-way for US I/SR 4/SR 17 varies with a maximum of 120 feet. The required right-of-way for the main line widening varies with a maximum of an additional 120 feet. The required right-of-way for the intersection improvement is 160 feet on new location. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project descriptions was conducted along the entire length of the project corridors.
