Abstract

In compliance with Section l 06 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project NH-001-4(62), Spalding County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)". The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. Project NH-001-4(62) consists of improvements to the SR 16 and SR 3/ US 19 intersections in Spalding County, Georgia. The proposed project has been subjected to two previous surveys by Erica Jeter (previously Shoeneberg) in 1999 and 200 l (HP# HP991109-003). Since the previous surveys, the project has been changed to include additional mainline widening on the west side of SR 3/US 19. The additional required right-of-way begins 200 feet north of the SR 3/US 19/Poplar Road intersection and terminates 350 feet south of the same intersection. The total length of the reevaluation is 550 feet. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted along the entire length of the project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHW A Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources.
