Abstract

In compliance with Section L06 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments

thereto, project STP-2516(1), Spalding County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. The proposed project would reconstruct the intersection of Futral Road, Macon Road, and East College Street in Spalding County. Turn lanes will be added to Macon Road, and Futral Road and East College Road will be relocated to allow for proper alignment at the intersection. An additional 20 to 50 feet of additional right-of-way will be required. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor. The original survey inspected only one of the two proposed alignments for East College Street. Upon receiving more detailed construction plans, it was determined that the second alignment also needed survey. This proposed alignment would reconfigure East College Street to intersect Futral Road/Macon Road at a 90-degree angle and bear west approximately 276-270 degrees, crossing Potato Creek before turning northward to intersect the existing East College Street.
