Abstract

On March 29, 1995, Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corporation's (TGPL) cultural resources coordinator conducted an archaeological survey of the temporary work space areas to be utilized during the replacement of its thirty-inch Mainline "A" where it crosses the Yellow River in Rockdale County, Georgia (see Figure 1). Two areas of approximately 250 X 35 feet, totaling 0.40 acres, were examined. Replacement of the pipe is necessary because it is exposed and corroding. Proposed construction involves excavating a trench over the existing pipe, removing 270 feet of damaged pipe and then replacing it. All but a small portion of the trench excavations will occur within the limits of the previously disturbed right-of-way. Sandy soil conditions may require sloping the trench into the work space areas on each side of the riverbank; otherwise, the temporary work space will primarily be used for storing spoil and stringing pipe. The cultural resource investigation consisted of reviewing the State Historic Preservation Office files and conducting field work. No cultural resources were identified as a result of the investigation.
