Abstract

GDOT Project Pl No. #0014907 would replace the existing parallel bridges carrying State Route (SR) 4/United States (US) 1 over North Fork Spirit Creek in Richmond County, Georgia (Figures 1 and 2). The existing south bound bridge was constructed in 1952 and widened in 1991, and the existing north bound bridge was constructed in 1990. The bridges consist of two parallel bridges each carrying two lanes of opposing traffic. The northbound bridge consists of five spans of Reinforced Concrete Deck Girders (RCDGs) on concrete caps with concrete columns. The southbound bridge consists of five spans of steel I-beams on concrete caps with concrete columns. The south bound bridge has a sufficiency rating of 77.6 and the north bound bridge has a sufficiency rating of 93.4. The existing typical section consists of two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction, 10-foot outside shoulders, 4-foot inside shoulders and a 40-foot depressed grass median (open between the bridges). The project is in a preliminary concept phase and the proposed typical section has not yet been determined. The existing right-of-way (ROW) is 150 feet, and the proposed ROW would be determined as project plans develop.
