Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BRS-2692 (9), Quitman County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. Project BRS-2692 would replace the structurally deficient bridge on SR 39 over Soapstone Creek on existing location utilizing a runaround detour east of the existing roadway. The proposed project on SR 39 would begin approximately 120 meters (400 feet) north and end approximately 120 meters (400 feet) south of the existing bridge structure. The existing right-of-way on SR 39 is approximately 30.4 meters (100 feet). Approximately, 3.0 meters (l0 feet) of additional required right-o f-way would be utilized immediately adjacent to the existing bridge structure for the runaround detours. All other projects construction is restricted to within the SR 39 existing right-of-way. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project description was conducted for the entire length of the project corridor.
