Abstract

Environmental Corporation of America (ECA) has completed an Archaeological Assessment for the federal undertaking at the subject site. The proposed undertaking would include a proposed 8-foot by 8-foot (2-meter by 2-meter) monopole site that would include a 163-foot overall height monopole communications structure and associated ground-level support equipment. The subject site is located off of Pulaski Street, Gray, Jones County, Georgia. This archaeological assessment was conducted in order to ascertain whether the proposed undertaking, on the project site, might directly or indirectly affect cultural resources, if any such resources exist. Through our review of available cultural records and databases, we found seven previously recorded archaeological sites (9JO151, 9JO238, 9JO277, 9JO280, 9JO281, 9JO282, 9JO298) and seven survey reports (931, 1992, 4609, 5620, 6928, 7973, 8419) within our standard 1-mile background research radius. The previously recorded archaeological sites and survey reports are not within or near the APE for direct effects. The proposed undertaking is located within an existing fenced and gravel-covered utility substation. The utility substation has existed since at least 1973. During the course of the field survey portion of this archaeological assessment, no archaeological cultural resources were encountered. We conclude that the undertaking would not affect any historic or prehistoric archaeological resources that are listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Therefore, for archaeological cultural resources, we recommend a finding of No Effect for the proposed undertaking at the project site.
