Abstract

As part of the research carried out on this proposed project, the archaeologist attached to the Environmental Analysis Bureau was sent to the area. Prior to her field work she checked the county site file to see if there were any known sites within the project area. She also examined the pertinent topographic maps - Garden City Georgia Quadrangle and Port Wentworth Georgia-/South Carolina Quadrangle -and D.O.T. 1 inch to 1,000 feet aerial photographs. Using these maps, she located two areas in an otherwise urban setting that seemed to offer the only possibilities of archaeological sites. On arriving in the field on Jan. 21st, the entire line was visited and the two areas of interest were located. The first is along the expansion of the right-of-way between the Central of Georgia Rail road tracks on 307 and the right hand turn off to the Sewage Disposal Plant. The area is fairly well drained- due to Pipe Makers Canal - with a mixed hardwood cover. No archaeological material was seen in the exposed areas along the line, and the only artificial elevations were dredge heaps from Pipe Makers Canal.
