Abstract

The proposed project would consist of the construction of a new alignment roadway, Infantry Road, in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia. In addition, an extension to the Follow Me Multi-Use Trail would be constructed along an abandoned railroad bed and connect to Infantry Road (Figure 1). The proposed Infantry Road would consist of two 12- foot travel lanes, one in each direction, with curb and gutter. The road would connect on the west end to an existing roundabout at South Lumpkin Road and intersect on the east end on the Ft. Benning Army Base at Ft. Benning Road.

The length of the proposed new alignment road is approximately .3 mile. The new section of the Follow Me Trail would be constructed on Ft. Benning and begin approximately .4 mile north of the proposed Infantry Road. At the intersection with Infantry Road the trail would turn to the west and continue adjacent to the north side of the road to the intersection of South Lumpkin Road. The length of the proposed multi-use trail portion of the project is approximately .71 mile. The portion of the proposed Infantry Road and Follow Me Multi-Use Trail not constructed on Ft. Benning would be located within land owned by the National Infantry Museum Foundation.
