Abstract

In agreement with Dr. Lewis H. Larson, State Archaeologist, and Dr. Elizabeth A. Lyon, State Historic Preservation Officer, an intensive archaeological survey was conducted on that segment of the proposed Appalachian Development Highway System between the Blue Ridge By-Pass in Fannin County and the Blairsville By-Pass in Union County. This survey was in the form of a complete 100% pedestrian walk-through with thorough examination of all exposed surfaces, especially those in high site probability areas. This examination led to the identification of two areas which were collected and designated archaeological sites and several other areas of possible archaeological significance. However, no site considered worthy of National Register of Historic Places eligibility nomination was noted. Several areas obscured by existing crops should be re-surveyed after these crops have been harvested (September or October, 1981). These areas lie within the first one-half mile of the project immediately adjacent to SR 2/ U.S. 76 and at a point near where the project crosses Collins Branch east of Hemptown Gap.
