Abstract

A cultural resources survey for the Hiram Road bridge replacement in Cobb County, Georgia was conducted by Brockington and Associates, Inc. in April 1995. The project corridor encompasses 328 m (1075 It) of Hiram Road, including the bridge crossing Powder Springs Creek. Bridge replacement and associated road realignment will impact less than 30 m (100 feet) on either the north or south sides of Hiram Road. Archival research revealed no previously recorded archaeological sites or National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) properties located within one-half mile of the project corridor. Archaeological field survey involved visual inspection of exposed ground surfaces and 30 m interval screened shovel testing of the project corridor. Architectural survey included the evaluation of buildings within 0.5 mile of the project corridor. Architectural survey methods consisted of driving the project area, with pedestrian inspection of all potentially historic buildings. The present archaeological survey located no archaeological sites within the existing right-of-way. Likewise, all structures within one-half mile of the project corridor are less than 50 years old making them ineligible for the NRHP consideration. It is recommended that the project corridor be given cultural resources clearance to proceed.
