Abstract

A cultural resources survey for the proposed Towne Lake Parkway highway improvements, Cherokee County, Georgia, was conducted by Brockington and Associates, Inc. in April 1995. The project corridor encompasses 2.48 km (1.54 miles) of Towne Lake Parkway, including a bridge crossing at Noonday Creek. Project implementation will impact approximately 15 m (50 feet) on each side of the project corridor. Archival research revealed that three previously recorded archaeological sites are located within and near (0.5 mile) the project corridor. Site 9CK683 was located at the Towne Lake Parkway interchange of I-575. The site was destroyed as a result of the construction of the interchange and no longer exists. Site 9CK7 is located 200 m south of the project corridor. Site 9CK681 is 300 m northwest of the project area, east of Chapman School in Woodstock. Project implementation will not impact sites 9CK7 or 9CK681. There are no National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) properties located within or near (0.5 mile) the project corridor. Archaeological field survey involved visual inspection of exposed ground surfaces and 30 m interval screened shovel testing of the project corridor. Architectural survey included the evaluation of historic buildings within and near (0.5 mile) the project corridor in terms of NRHP eligibility and visual impact. No historic buildings were observed within or near (0.5 mile) the project corridor during the cultural resources survey. The present archaeological survey located no archaeological sites within the existing right-of-way. Likewise, all structures within 0.5 mile of the project corridor are less than 50 years old making them ineligible for the NRHP consideration. The findings of this survey recommend that the project corridor be given cultural resources clearance to proceed.
