Abstract

Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT} project F-058-1(17} was originally a state-aid project designated PESP-2(9}. The project consist-ed of straightening curves and providing passing lanes at nine locations along U.S. 76/S.R. 2 in Rabun County and required the acquisition of 31 separate parcels of property from within the Chattahoochee National Forest (Attachment l). Under the provisions of a Special Use Permit issued by the U.S. Forest Service in August 1980 an archaeological survey of these 31 parcels was conducted by the GDOT staff archaeologist resulting in the conclusion that the project as proposed would have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.

The scope of the project has since been expanded to include two additional sections, requiring the acquisition of two additional parcels of property from within the Chattahoochee National Forest. Addition one is located just west of the S.R. 2/S.R. 197 intersection along the westbound lane of S.R. 2 and includes approximately l. 36 acres. The second addition is located along the westbound lane of S.R. 2 just east of Turkey Gap Road and includes a total of 1.92 acres (Attachment 2}. This report is concerned with the archaeological survey conducted at these two additional locations.
