In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project BRS-0854(10), Fannin County, has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. The proposed project would consist of the replacement of the bridges on SR 60 over Chapel Branch and Skeenah Creek south of the city of Morganton in Fannin County. The proposed project at Chapel Branch would begin approximately 520 ft north of Chapel Branch and would end approximately 440 ft south of Chapel Branch. The existing right-of-way is approximately 80 ft. Additional required right-of-way would be 20 ft on each side of the roadway. Also required would be an easement on the west side of the roadway measuring approximately 490 ft in length and of varying width (maximum= 20 ft). Over Skeenah Creek, the project would begin approximately 550 ft west of the creek and would end approximately 800 ft east of the creek. The existing right-of-way varies to approximately 110 ft. Additional required right-of-way varies to a maximum of 65 ft, but it is only required on the south side of SR 60. An archaeological survey consistent with the project description was conducted for both project locations.
