Abstract

An archaeological survey was conducted on July 29, 1983 at the proposed construction area of four cottages at Little Ocmulgee State Park, Wheeler County. The proposed .75 ha impact zone Is located along the bank of a small artificial lake created by impounding the Little Ocmulgee River. The impact zone stretches approximately 250 m along the lake and extends 30 m in from the shoreline (Figure 1). Prior to lake impoundment, the impact zone would have been on a gently sloping first terrace overlooking the river swamp. Current vegetation in the area surveyed consisted of small oaks and pines with a relatively dense understory of scrubs and vines. Exposed ground surface was restricted to a narrow path along the lake within the western portion of the Impact zone and within a cleared power-line right-of-way along the western edge of the impact zone. Overall, about 5% of the area had exposed ground surface.
