Abstract

On July 1-2, 2002, TRC Garrow Associates, Inc. carried out an archaeological and historic structures reconnaissance of a corridor for a proposed trail along Goodyear A venue and Cassville Road (SR 293) in Bartow County, Georgia. The proposed construction will be primarily within road right-of-way and within an abandoned railroad bed (Figure 1). The Area of Potential Effects (APE) for the tract also was examined. The APE is defined as "the geographic area or areas within which an undertaking may directly or indirectly cause changes in the character or use of historic properties, if any such properties exist" (36 CFR Part 800.16[ d]). The goal of this project was to identify all potential architectural resources within the APE, and as many archaeological sites as possible in areas of greatest potential.

TRC identified two historic properties that are likely eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) within and near the project corridor: the abandoned railroad bed upon which a portion of the trail will be constructed, and the Goodyear plant along Goodyear Avenue. Due to the nature of the project, we conclude that the project will have no affect on the Goodyear property, and a positive effect on the railroad bed.
