On June 15, 1977, the author, accompanied by Kent A. Schneider and Roosevelt Garland, initiated an intensive systematic surface collection of the Brown Bottom Site. A transect line running west with stakes placed approximately 20 feet apart had already been laid out previously by Schneider to a distance of 200 feet. A transect line running north was laid out to 200 feet again with stakes placed 20 feet apart. A second north transect line was laid at 20 feet west to a distance of 200 feet. These north lines were continued to a distance of 200 feet north every 20 feet to the stake labeled 200 feet west. At stakes l60W, l80W and 200w the north line was run to a distance of 300 feet. Use of a transit insured accuracy of the transect lines and allowed for tight control on the limits of the 20 foot squares to be collected. The intensive surface collection involved collection of all materials observed in each 20 foot square. The fieldwork was complete on June 16 by the author with the assistance of Gerald Turner .
