Abstract

The proposed project would consist of the installation of the GDOT NaviGAtor System at all entrance ramp locations along 1-75 from the Eagles Landing Parkway to the Cleveland Avenue interchange in Henry, Fulton and Clayton Counties (see attached Figures 1A through 1 G). Included in the proposed project would be surveillance cameras (CCTV), intersection video detection system (IVDS) and ramp meters. Each ramp meter would require at least one IVDS to monitor operations, as well as CCTV for visual coverage. All supporting hardware, devices, poles and/or mast arms, lane markings, traffic signal equipment, and signage for the installation of ramp meters are included in this project. The purpose of the proposed project is to increase the efficiency and safety of the corridor by expanding the NaviGAtor system on 1-75 from SR 138 to Cleveland Avenue in Fulton, Clayton, and Henry Counties (see Figures IA to IF). The expansion of the NaviGAtor system in this region would help manage the congestion currently being experienced along this corridor during peak hours. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) NaviGAtor - Intelligent Transportation System has been in operation since April 1996. It is currently being extended with projects on I-20, 1-75, I-85, I-285, I-575, I-675, SR 400, and US 78 planned as part of the Fast Forward Program. The system consists of CCTV cameras, VDS cameras, radar detection systems (RDS), CMS, and ramp meters. By use of a fiber optic communications backbone, all the devices are tied to the Transportation Management Center (TMC) and various Traffic Control Centers (TCCs) in the Metro Atlanta area. Operators located at the TMC are able to detect incidents and dispatch with minimal delay and appropriate response teams. The NaviGAtor program benefits the trucking industry and motorists by reducing incident response/clearance times, and providing better information· with consequential safety improvement.
