Abstract

During the period of February 11 through 26, 2003, Phase II archeological testing was conducted at Sites 9HY292, 9HY294, 9BS30, 9BS32, 9BS36 and 9BS45 within the proposed Tussahaw Creek Reservoir project area in Henry and Butts Counties, Georgia. These sites had been recommended potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places based on the 1999 cultural resources survey for the proposed Tussahaw Reservoir. Based on survey and testing efforts, evidence for Middle Archaic, Late Archaic, Middle Woodland, Late Woodland, Early Mississippian and Late Mississippian periods were identified. The most intensive settlement was during the Late Archaic and Late Woodland periods.

The archeological resources at these locations were found to exhibit little or no contextual clarity due to low artifact density/diversity and/or historic disturbances, most often related to historic cultivation, silviculture, and erosion. No intact features or midden deposits were found, or are likely to be present at these sites. These six archeological resources do not have the potential to yield additional significant archeological information. Therefore, Sites 9BS30, 9BS32, 9BS36, 9BS45, 9HY292 and 9HY294 are recommended ineligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion D. No further archeological work is recommended.
