Abstract

The Geneva Baptist Church is a one-story, gable-end church type, with a front facade transept, a rear and east wing addition, a front gabled entry bay porch, and a west side shed porch. The primary characteristics of this church type displayed by the Geneva Baptist Church are the front facing gable, rectangular shape, clapboard siding, short steeple/bell tower and small entrance porch. Other notable characteristics are the double central doors, tall triple hung windows and cross aisle (transept). The church continues to exhibit architectural integrity with the retention of its original materials, such as siding, doors, window sashes, and stylistic details. The only exterior alterations are the rear and east wing additions and the addition of a wheelchair ramp with brick wall for screening.

The interior of the Geneva Baptist Church has original benches, choir box, and pulpit. The walls and floors in the sanctuary appear to have been sheetrocked and carpeted, c. 1970. The rear addition, c. 1955, has its original finishes and materials.

The Geneva Baptist Church sits on the north side of S.R. 96 in the town of Geneva, Georgia. The immediate vicinity is commercial and residential. The land is flat and sandy with few trees or shrubs. The property has a dirt parking lot. To the west of the church and on the property is a non-historic shed and an in-ground utility cellar. The property is bounded to the south by S.R. 96 and a railroad, to the east by a wooded lot, to the south by a paved road and another church, and to the west by a vacant lot.
