Abstract

Havenwood Grove, LP wishes to construct a senior center on an 11-acre tract of land in southern Henry County, Georgia. Because the project is being developed under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the project must comply with the provisions of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. To comply, Havenwood had cultural resources records review performed, which recommended that a Phase I archaeological survey of the tract be conducted. This report presents the results of that survey, which was conducted on June 18, 2019 by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc..

Archival research showed that no previously recorded archaeological sites were on the property, but that a late nineteenth to twentieth century house existed on the southern edge of the property. Our archaeological survey relied on systematic, 30-m interval shovel testing of the gently rolling, heavily wooded property. One site, the house site on the southern boundary, was detected and investigated. This site, given the number 9HY567, is a late nineteenth to mid-twentieth century house site that has been heavily disturbed. It also has experienced a great deal of dumping of late twentieth century debris. We recommend that site 9HY567 does not meet any of the criteria for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore, we conclude that no significant archaeological sites will be impacted by the proposed development of the Havenwood Senior Center and that the project should be granted clearance to proceed.
