Abstract

An archaeological-historical survey of Hartwell-Hart County Recreation Park in Hartwell, Georgia was conducted in October, 1976 by Associates in Planning and Development Consulting, Inc. The site consists of 25.70 acres, which has been developed as the recreation facility for the county since 1970. It is bounded on the south by Powell Road, on the east and north by private property, and on the west by Bailey Drive. A paved road bisects the site connecting Powell Road to Clay Street. The area bordered by the paved street, Bailey Drive and Powell Road, is extensively developed for recreation purposes. It consists of three baseball fields, four tennis courts, open side metal building, two restrooms and several scattered storage rooms. The remainder of the site which is the subject of the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation grant is heavily wooded. The wooded area represents approximately 45% of the site. The proposed facility is a baseball-football field combination at the south end of the wooded area. The remainder of the area will be undisturbed at the present time. The wooded area is covered heavily with undergrowth mainly smilax, briars, and other scrub-type vegetation. The existing underground installations are a ten-inch sewer line running north-south along the edge of the wooded area and a three-quarters of an inch galvanized water line serving a restroom and an office building. Obviously, the area was disturbed by the construction of such installations and an erosion wash is evident in the area.
