Abstract

In response to a request from Ignite Wireless, Inc., RESCOM Environmental Corp., has completed a Phase IA archaeological reconnaissance and records check for a proposed telecommunications tower site in Appling County, Georgia, approximately 3 miles northwest of Baxley (Figure 1). The project is located at 31°48'13.4"N 82°24'30.8"W, as seen on the Pine Grove, GA, USGS 7.5' topographical quadrangle (Figure 2). The project area measures approximately 0.5-acre in total and consists of a 100-ft by 100-ft section of a harvested cotton field with access easements to the west-southwest (Figure 3). Access easements encompass part of the cotton field and previously disturbed areas adjacent to a water tower compound. An archaeological records check conducted on behalf of RESCOM by the UGA Laboratory of Archaeology via the Georgia Archaeological Site File (GASF) shows one previously recorded archaeological site (9AP41) overlapping the project area, however upon reevaluation no archaeological resources were observed within the project location. Fieldwork was conducted on November 25, 2019 by qualified professional archaeologist Eric Sanchez, Indiana University 2008, under the supervision of Andrew Smith M.A., Ball State University 2010, Principal Investigator and Secretary of Interior qualified professional archaeologist, and required 3 hours of fieldwork. This report details the results of the records check and Phase IA field reconnaissance and presents the conclusions and recommendations of RESCOM concerning any additional archaeological investigations.
