Abstract

TerraXplorations, Inc. (TerraX) of Mobile, Alabama was contracted by Trileaf Corporation of Maitland, Florida to conduct a Phase I archaeological direct effects survey and a visual effects survey for the proposed Clayfields-B cellular tower in Wilkinson County, Georgia. The Area of Potential Effects (APE) for direct effects includes a proposed 10,000 sq ft lease area with a proposed access road. The access road measures 498 ft (151.8 m) in length by 20 ft (6.1 m) in width to connect with GA Highway 57. The proposed tower will be self-supporting and constructed to a height of 260 ft (79.2 m). The total area of the direct effects APE including the lease area and joint access and utility easement amounts to 0.48 acres (0.19 hectares).

Background research and the field survey followed guidelines established under the FCC Programmatic Agreement. No previously recorded archaeological sites are situated within a 0.75-mile radius of the project area, but there are five previously recorded historic resources. During the course of the field survey portion of this archaeological assessment, no archaeological sites or cultural material were encountered. Resource 236655, a Ranch house, is eligible for the NRHP under Criterion C, but due to distance and intervening vegetation, only the top of the tower may be visible and it will not have an overt physical or visual presence on the resource. Therefore, the proposed tower will have no adverse effect on this resource.

The proposed Clayfields-B cellular tower is expected to have no effect or no adverse effect on any historic or prehistoric resources that are listed in or eligible for listing in the NRHP.
